THE MAC ANNOUNCES THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS:  Philip Van Keuren: Forty Years of Works on Paper, 1969-2009, Ivan Stoytchev: The Shape of Colors,  and  Eric McGehearty: Surface with an Opening.  The exhibits open Saturday, November 14 and continue through December 19, 2009.

(Dallas, Texas, October 7)  The MAC is proud to present three new exhibitions:  Philip Van Keuren: Forty Years of Works on Paper, 1969-2009,  Ivan Stoytchev: The Shape of Colors, and Eric McGehearty:  Surface with an Opening in the New Works Space. The opening reception will be Saturday, November 14 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at The MAC, located at 3120 McKinney Avenue in the Uptown District of Dallas.  All three artists will be in attendance at the opening.

Art Talks with Stoytchev and McGehearty will be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30 at The MAC.

Philip Van Keuren: Forty Years of Works on Paper, 1969-2009 brings together for the first time a selection of the artist’s collages, drawings, photographs a spanning forty years. Van Keuren is an Associate Professor of Art, in the Division of Art here at Southern Methodist University,

Van Keuren made many of his early works prior to any formal university study, For his early work, the artist collected discarded felt blotters from a the City of Dallas print shop where he worked to create small-scale studies. These studies were influenced by poetry, direct observations of the world, and folk art of 19th and early 20th-century American pieced quilts. Painstakingly pieced together, the earliest works not only reflect his patient and determined nature but perhaps more importantly a young artist’s first artistic thoughts as he responded to his world of places and things. 

Van Keuren’s later works served as studies for large-scale paintings done during his BFA studies at SMU before departing for New York City to participate in the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. Van Keuren returned to Texas after earning his MFA in 1977.

While at the prestigious McDowell Artist Colony in 1978, Van Keuren began writing poetry as an adjunct interest to art-making that continues to this day.

The early works remain important (even critical) to him and are central to understanding his current artwork.

The Shape of Colors features the works of Ivan Stoytchev.  Born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, Stoytchev has an MFA from the Nikolaj Pavlovich National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia and studied at The Cite des Arts in France. Stoytchev has exhibited in France, Germany and Japan.  In 2008, his work was selected as part of the New Texas Talent XV Juried exhibition at Craighead Green Gallery.. Ivan Stoytchev lives and works in both Dallas, Texas and Sofia, Bulgaria.

Stoytchev uses multiple, thick layers of colorful “impasto”. These abstractions create a broad spectrum of surfaces with unique texture and color

Surface with an Opening by Eric McGehearty is an exhibition in which the artist takes a radically different direction.  His much-anticipated body of work is a long departure from his “books” series.  Eric uses the human mouth as a vehicle to explore the viewer’s visceral experience to his work.  The artist refuses to go into detail about his newest pieces, as he waits for the public response.

Eric McGehearty has an MFA in Sculpture from University of North Texas in Denton and a Bachelor in Arts from University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.  His work has been shown at the Gerald Peters Gallery, in Dallas, John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; the Armory Show in New York, and the Piedmont Arts Museum in Virginia.  He lives and works in Lewisville, Texas.

McGehearty. as an artist with dyslexia, explores the worlds of illegibility and inaccessibility. He views his work as a visual branch of semiotics (the theory and study of signs and symbols) that embraces both formal and conceptual contradiction.
